A TEAM of researchers in Lancashire are exploring ways of improving the care and treatment for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.

The team from Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, which covers East Lancashire, are undertaking the work after noticing a rise in diagnoses and increasing life expectancy.

Dr Salman Karim, a consultant psychiatrist and honorary lecturer at the University of Manchester, is leading the team working on the cause, care, cure and prevention of dementia.

They will study the biological make-up of sufferers to see if any new tests can be developed to diagnose the disease at an early stage.

Dr Karim said: “There has never been a more important time to conduct research options to help with care, treatment and support. We hope to be able to make life easier for those living with dementia but also for their family and friends.”

They will be taking part in international clinical trials aiming at developing new medications.
