East Lancs students to receive iPads in new scheme

Lancashire Telegraph: iPads are on their way for pupils iPads are on their way for pupils

PARENTS have backed a high school scheme in which they will fund the roll out of iPads for pupils.

All Haslingden High School pupils in Years Seven, Eight and Nine will be equipped with mini iPads after parents joined a borrowing scheme.

Parents who have agreed to fund an iPad will pay £10 a month for 30 months and will own the device at the end of the agreement.

Families unable to afford the cost have been supported by the school, which has joined forces with a charitable foundation which funds technology in schools.

The scheme with charity the E-Learning Foundation provides the opportunity for every student under 14 to have their own iPad.

Headteacher Mark Jackson said the scheme followed 12 months of close consultation with parents as to how they wished to proceed.

He said: “We will provide the opportunity for every student to have their own iPad for use both within school and at home.”

A small minority, around 40 pupils, of Year Seven to Nine pupils, whose parents have opted out, will still have access to iPads in school, but will not take them home. The vast majority of younger pupils will use the iPads as their own personal device.

My daughter is one of those getting an iPad. She'll still use pen and paper (along with her brain!). This will simply be another learning tool in an increasingly technological world.

Why stop with pens and paper, what was wrong with a quill or even a slate and chalk?

Computing is clearly the future and the kids with access to a tablet PC like this will have a huge advantage because the future will be a lot more familiar. If I even reached for a pen in my job I would get moaned at for making a copy of something not stored in the cloud for everybody to access!

That was aimed at DoggydogNo1 by the way not Mrs.S.

I do agree with bishbut though, why iPads? Plenty of cheaper better tablets on the market!

They're not though are they, you clearly don't understand the tablet market. Look at the percentage of Fortune 500 companies that use iPads, and the only device approved by the FAA and CAA for flight mapping on commercial flights. Yeah let's get some cheapo android devices so when they get into the real world they can learn it all again, the Apple way.

Teach them to read, write and do basic arithmetic first. Technology can come later.

And I think it's fair to say that Apple might have the largest single-company sales figures for tablets but Android has the lion's share of the market. Ever tried doing anything via Bluetooth with an iPad? Or downloading anything not from iTunes??

Thanks for the marketing, now skip on back to the Apple store, genius.

Kids absorb technology and user interfaces with ease, they switch devices within minutes and have mastered them after a few hours.

Don't confuse fashion with function.

You need to see them in action before judging - imagine your child sat in a maths lesson working on a sheet and getting stuck on question 2, the rest of the class are on numbers 5 and 6, the teacher can pick up on this and message them straightaway and through their own iPad show them what to do - no embarrassment for the child and no waiting a few days before the teacher gets the chance to mark - they are expensive for parents but they are the future!!

Why stop at ipads then? Get them motorized scooters so they dont have to walk!

Computers are the future and there will come a day when a handful of teachers will run a school of 100s from 1 location with video technology but
once they leave school and enter the real world, they will find it aint all about ipads,is it? No auto correct, no looking up the answer.

In fact, why go to school at all when it can all be done in front of a computer!
