Blackburn pub calls time

ANOTHER pub in Blackburn has called last orders for the final time.

The West View Hotel, in Revidge Road, shut its doors earlier this week and signs and fittings were removed from the Thwaites pub, which sold real ales and featured snooker and darts teams.

One councillor said the economic climate and changing population was to blame for the closure, which he described as a ‘shame’.

Labour councillor Arshid Mahmood, who represents the Corporation Park ward and lives in Revidge Road, said: “This is another pub that is not used that well, and the community has changed.

“That’s the same scenario across town, but a whole host of pubs in the area, apart from one, have closed now.

“It’s a shame to see another community asset, and a place where people could meet, gone.”

Pubs in Blackburn are closing at an alarming rate, according to statistics published by drinks trade analysts CGA, which showed the town to be one of the worst in the country for pub closures in 2012.

A Facebook group set to up track closing pubs in the town, called Closed Pubs of Blackburn, saw users speculate about the West View’s future.

Ian Knowles wrote: “My dad used to be in there every weekend playing snooker, up until about 20 years ago.

“The demise of pubs in Blackburn and Darwen is awful.

“Sadly, it’s a sign of the times, changed licensing hours and a changed population in some areas, not mention high investment and rental needed by the breweries.”

And Richard Carr added: “I live two minutes away and go in for darts now and again, but it is usually very quiet.

“I would go in more but virtually all pubs are too expensive a hobby now to be a regular anywhere like the last generation could afford to be.”

Thwaites yesterday confirmed the closure but said it was unable to comment further.

Pubs are not closing down in Blackburn and Darwen at an alarming rate. Pubs are closing down in Blackburn at an alarming rate.

In Darwen new pubs are opening. In recent years we have seen the opening of the Bridgewater, the Belgrave, Bar 39 and The Old Chapel in the town centre, the Old Function Room at Cranberry Fold and Oakenhust Farm out near the motorway. None of these new pubs is a Thwaites pub which tells its own story.

It is still more than possible not only to keep an old pub going but to open a new pub - so long as the pub is properly managed and serves the market as it is today, not how it was in the 1970s.

I wonder if you will be gloating when another load of taxi drivers lose their income from lack of customers needing a lift home from the pub?

I know a lot of pub goers that will be.

Another traditional saying of the pub goers and most locals is "you shouldn't cut your nose off to spite your face" and another one, "don't bite the hand that feeds you", and if the changing population were educated enough to understand that then maybe so many pubs wouldn't be closing down.

Integrate or emigrate, easy choice really!

yes and that will stay open for all of 10seconds! the fact is that those who used to frequent the pubs no longer live in the area and infact the pubs no longer appealed to the next generation....some of these places were stuck in the 70's and 80's.....FYI the community you are attacking with your veiled respnse (no pun intended) did not mind pubs on the end of thier street corners it was each to their own.....the demise of the local pub is not just to demographics..If there is no demand then its obvious that they will close....where would you rather go a nice trendy bar with decent music and a decent crowd or a pub run in the cold and wet merely to boast you made it to the end.....surrounded with the smell of the 80s!
