POLICE yesterday searched a Blackburn house after discovering a small amount of suspected chemicals.

A 22-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images when police said they then discovered a suspicious substance during further searching the property in Worcester Road.

Police officers visited the semi-detached house shortly after 11pm on Thursday night and members of the bomb squad arrived at the scene in the morning.

Officers stood guard outside the house from Thursday night and items were seen being removed and taken away.

Residents have spoken of their ‘shock and concern’ at seeing the police officers outside of the property.

Neighbour Barry Raley, 52, who lives next to the property, said: “I was very distressed when I saw all the police outside in the road on Thursday night. I can’t believe that they went into next door.

“The family have always kept themselves to themselves.

“You always hear of police raids happening but you never think that it’s going to be the house next door to you.”

Paul Kelly, 48, who lives across the road, said: “There have been loads of police in and around the property.

“Everyone is wondering what exactly has gone on over there.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Just after 11pm last night, Thursday, January 23, a warrant was executed at an address in Worcester Road.

“A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of indecent images and taken into police custody.

“During an initial search of the premises, a small amount of chemicals were found and as a result the house was secured and further searches are underway.

“None of the items found pose any immediate danger.

“The 22-year-old man is also being questioned in relation to these items.”
