Iain Duncan Smith refuses to meet foodbank bosses

Lancashire Telegraph: Iain Duncan Smith Iain Duncan Smith

A FOODBANK charity which helps out hundreds of people in East Lancashire has been accused of ‘scaremongering’ by the Work and Pension Secretary.

Iain Duncan Smith, who has introduced the bedroom tax and other welfare reforms, has refused to meet bosses at the Trussell Trust, which runs food banks in Blackburn and Clitheroe.

And in a letter to trust chairman Chris Mould, he said he object to the ‘politicial messaging of your organisation’, as demand for food bank services soar following welfare cuts.

Mr Duncan Smith added: “I strongly refute this claim and would politely ask you to stop scaremongering in this way.”

Lord Freud, the minister for welfare reform, also turned down a request for talks.

Mr Mould said: “We are deeply disappointed, but we are as open as ever to meet ministers in the hope that perhaps the New Year will bring a fresh approach to what could so easily have been a fruitful dialogue.”

A Department for Work and Pensions spokesman claimed there was ‘no robust evidence’ linking welfare reform to increased use of foodbanks, adding: “Our welfare reforms will improve the lives of some of the poorest families in our communities with the universal credit making 3million households better off – the majority of these from the bottom two-fifths of the income scale.”

The DWP official said it was ‘not surprising’ more people were using foodbanks, if the trust was opening more.

If you've been in receipt of HB prior to 1st Jan 1996 then you're exempt from the bedroom tax.

Google “Statutory Instrument 217 of 2006 “ and you are taken to it and then look at pages 32 to 33 of this .pdf file. You could even then go to look at SI 2870 of 2007 when the definition of “eligible rent” was slightly amended but to no consequence for the protected 1996 issue and then you could access the A4/2012 HB circular and the SI 3040 of 2012 which introduced the bedroom tax to see if this protected 1996 issue has been modified, removed or amended for the bedroom tax. It hasn’t!

Or you could go back to HB Anorak and the rightnets discussion and read the second paragraph which reference the CPR 2006 and states:

“That paragraph applies mainly to ‘exempt accommodation’, but it also applies to any HB case (absolutely any case without exception, including rebates and HA general needs) where the claimant has been getting HB since 1/1/96.”

Maybe the reason usage is on the increase because it's there offering free food.
Just to let you know ! The people who use food banks actually sell there handouts. I know I've bought it off them. So think on before you donate. Merry Christmas.

Whatever the reason for the startling increase in the use of foodbanks, it escapes me for one why anyone would vote against an investigation as to the reasons for the increase. They did this in Parliament last week.

I also think it inexcusable that some of our local MPs eg Gordon Birtwistle did not even bother to attend the debate let alone vote. Anyone still believe that these guys are evenly remotely interested in those they are supposed to represent?

I don't blame IDS for not meeting the bosses of the Trussell Trust. It is nothing but a political gimmick. Many using the food banks are abusing them, while others just go because they are there. As I have said before, there is no one starving in this country,
