EXTRA illumination is set to be installed by volunteers to shed new light on activities at a popular Burnley park — and provide no hiding places for troublemakers.
Plans for a £2,500 lighting scheme have been drawn up by the Friends of Ightenhill Park for a footpath winding through the 102-year-old venue.
The ‘friends’ have already raised £2,000 towards the initiative — and had approached Burnley Central West county councillor Tony Martin.
He has approved the handout from his community fund —subject to the application being ‘called-in’ by his fellow county councillors in the next week.
Barrie Bamford, the friends group’s chairman, making the application, said: “The footpath through the park will be illuminated and it will benefit the public and help FOIP when holding our Christmas carol service. It will also help to stop anti-social behaviour.”
Work has already been undertaken by council green spaces staff to fit new power points and cables, ahead of the installation of the lights, funded by the voluntary organisation.
The friends have a number of other plans in the pipeline for the park, including the introduction of £500 worth of new plants for the spring, and work is anticipated on the bandstand.
New outdoor fitness equipment has also recently been installed at Ightenhill and there have been approaches from trainers regarding staging classes on the course.
