VOLUNTEERS from Hyndburn, Burnley and Pendle have been nominated for the first Service to Disability award at the Lancashire Sports Awards.

Phil Butterworth from Burnley, Roheel Ahmed from Hyndburn and Amanda Marriott from Pendle are all on the shortlist for the award which recognises significant voluntary contribution to disability sport.

The Disability Sport Forum created the award after the public raised concerns that Lancashire wasn’t promoting the work done to get people with disabilities active.

Andrew Whitaker, chairman of the forum, said: “The support our Paralympians received last year at the London 2012 games raised the profile of what people can achieve, whatever their disability or background.

“We wanted to reflect the fantastic work that is done in Lancashire.”

Jimmy Armfield, chairman of the Sports Awards judging panel, said: “It’s been a privilege to judge this category.”

The Lancashire Sports Awards will take place at De Vere Hotel, Blackpool, next Friday with special guest GB cyclist Steven Burke MBE.
