A BUSINESS owner in Accrington won an array of pies and cakes after he correctly predicted the time of the opening goal in Stanley’s Lancashire ‘pie derby’ with Rochdale.

David Wearden runs personalised print product company, Gift Street, in Peel Street, Accrington, and entered a Twitter competition run by Clayton Park Bakerty.

When his guess that the opening goal in the recent League Two clash at Accrington would be scored after six minutes proved to be correct, he landed a haul of pies and cakes from the Clayton-le-Moors-based bakery.

David said: “I go up to the ground at half-time, after the shop closes, but I saw the scores coming in so I knew before I left that I had won.

“It was just a pity the goal went to the wrong team.”

Clayton Park Bakery is the official supplier of pies at Stanley and Rochdale, and engaged with both clubs to run the competition, which also saw a box of pies going to runner-up, local sports journalist Jim Wilkinson.

The company also supplies pies and baked goods to several other clubs, including Blackburn Rovers.
