A CONTROVERSIAL application to construct 140 houses off Henthorn Road in Clitheroe looks set to be decided by borough councillors next week.

Developer Strategic Land Group has applied for permission to construct the homes opposite a site where 270 houses were allowed.

Objections have been raised by residents nearby who claim it is an unsuitable and unsustainable site, will increase traffic congestion and will increase pressure on schools in the town. The town council has also objected, saying the development is contrary to the emerging borough council’s core strategy, which envisages one strategic development site in Clitheroe.

Town councillors also said the applicant’s traffic assessment was flawed.

The vote comes after a previous application for the same number of houses on the same site, which was also submitted by applicant Strategic Land Group, was refused in April.

Officers have recommended the application is deferred and delegated to the director of community Services for approval following the satisfactory completion of a legal agreement.

The council will discuss the application on Thursday, October 10, at the borough council chambers in Church Street, Clitheroe, from 6.30pm.
