A MAN'S body was recovered from the railway track in Blackburn after being struck by a train.

Police and ambulance crews were called to Mill Hill station at around 9.15pm on Monday night, where they found the man’s body.

The Blackburn man, in his 20s, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene and police were not treating the death as suspicious.

His family was informed yesterday and a file was passed to the Coroners’ Office in Blackburn, a spokesman for British Transport Police said. Train operator Northern Rail said it had linked with the Samaritans to reduce deaths at train stations by working within the community.

It follows a number of rail deaths in the county in the past few months.

An investigation was launched in August when the body of 36-year-old Andrew Burgess was found under a railway bridge in Accrington.

Last month, William McNeil, 51, faced court after trying to sleep on tracks near Mill Hill station. A packed commuter train sped over him but ‘miraculously’ he survived.

And in August, Nigel Maude’s body was found on tracks in Hoghton, hours before his wife’s body was found stabbed to death at their home.

A spokesman for Northern Rail said: “Any traumatic incident which affects our employees triggers a dedicated chain of care, which ensures they receive the most suitable support in a compassionate and confidential environment. This includes thorough training and awareness to prepare our employees as well as counselling after an incident has happened.

“We also work closely with the Samaritans supporting our local communities by providing a call-out service for people in distress. We ensure there is post-incident support available for everyone, both employees and customers and through the Samaritans outreach programme, we develop links with mental health services.”
