READ all about it! Jean Redmayne is East Lancashire’s oldest newspaper deliverer.

The 85-year-old, of Darwen, delivers 133 copies of the Lancashire Telegraph’s weekly free sister paper The Citizen to homes in the town.

Mrs Redmayne first started delivering newspapers for Newsquest North West, the company that owns the Lancashire Telegraph and The Citizen, in 1993.

The pensioner, of Greenway Street, said she signed up to give her something to do.

She said: “My husband, Allan, had died the year before so I wanted to get out and about.

“I enjoy it and get to meet some nice people.

“It gets me out of the house and it is better than sitting at home.”

Mrs Redmayne, who has a daughter Kathleen, grandaughters Patti and Amily and great-grandchildren Amy, 18, Aleah, 14, James, nine, and Phoebe, two, delivers newspapers around the Hindle Street area.

She can be seen on the streets on a Wednesday, delivering the papers from her shopping trolley.

Grandaughter Patti said: “She does really well for somebody her age.

“We help her a bit but it is very much her round.

“I used to walk round with her when I was a child and now my daughter, Phoebe, does sometimes.”

Distribution manager for Newsquest Paul Berry said: “Jean is an absolute credit to the company.

“No matter what the weather is doing, come rain, shine and even snow, Jean is still out delivering The Citizen to residents in Darwen and long may she continue.

“It is fantastic to have reliable staff such as Jean and, on behalf of everyone, well done and keep up the good work.”

Although being the oldest in East Lancashire, Mrs Redmayne is three years the junior of the company’s oldest distributor, an 88-year-old on the Wirral.
