AN ALLEYWAY full of household waste and furniture is ‘worse than ever’, according to angry residents.

Neighbours in Wensley Road, Blackburn, have accused the council of not doing enough to address their concerns about the waste which they said had been near their homes since April.

The alley is well-known as a hotspot for people dumping food waste, furniture and household items.

John Smith, 66, who lives on Wensley Road, said: “I just want to live in an area with a clean environment and I believe that’s my right.

“Most people around here are too intimidated and disgusted to walk down the path and that’s a huge shame.

“We don’t seem to be getting any attention from the council and the smell is starting to become a real problem.

“I’ve seen groups of lads burning large amounts of plastic down there amongst other much worse goings on.”

Sarah Bell, 34, who lives near the end of the road, said the hot weather had only made the smell of rotting waste worse.

She said: “My friends and I avoid that area because it’s just disgusting.

“The smell is getting worse and worse and it’s horrible.

“I don’t know if people are not being told what they should be doing with their rubbish or that they just don’t care but something should be done about it and soon.

“The whole thing is not fair on the vast majority of residents who want to live in a clean community but are having to face this wasteland every day.”

Councillor Jim Smith, executive member for environment, said: “It’s just a shame that there are selfish people in the borough who leave mess behind.

“We will do all we can to find out those responsible and prosecute them.

“Fly-tipping causes great disruption and upset as well as being a health hazard.

“If you see anyone dumping rubbish or acting suspiciously, please report them by calling 01254 585921.”
