DOZENS of people will take part in a five-mile ‘angel’ walk in memory of a 21-year-old who took her own life after years of unsuccessful job applications.

Darwen job seeker Vicky Harrison died in March 2010 after her frustrating two-year hunt for work took its toll.

Now, 50 walkers are to set out on a trek as part of a project to remember Vicky and prevent other young deaths.

Parents Tony and Louise Harrison set up the Walk with an Angel project in the hope that some good could be created from Vicky’s tragic story.

Next month’s walk will see people trek from Blackburn’s Witton Park to the Havelock Inn in Havelock Street in Mill Hill.

On route, they will be taking in Blackburn town centre where the walkers wil bel raising awareness of all young suicides.

Tony said: “We did it last year and called it Walk with an Angel. We now want to make it an annual event, and hopefully spread the message nationally.”

A day after her latest rejection, and on the eve of her fortnightly trip to sign on, Vicky wrote heartbreaking notes to her parents and boyfriend saying 'I don't want to be me any more' and took a drug overdose.

Since her death, Tony has written a collection of songs with the aim of reducing the stigma that surrounds suicide.

His latest song, which will be played in the town centre during the walk and is being called Walk With An Angel, reflects a young person in a dark place, needing help.

The lyrics stress the impor-tance of seeking that help and not remaining ‘alone’.

He said: “We can’t bring Vicky back and, as the coroner said, on that day she had a moment of crisis.

“While that sometimes can’t be prevented, there are lots of times when it can. There is a stigma about feeling suicidal. It wasn’t long ago it was a crime. If we remove that stigma, people may feel more able to ask for help.”

The walk will also raise awareness and funds for Papy-rus, the Prevention of Young Suicide charity.

Walkers are gathering on Saturday, August 3 at 12.30pm at Witton Park.
