A BURNLEY man who caused a transatlantic plane to be diverted has now landed himself in trouble in the Yorkshire Dales.

Drunken Grant Smith, 40, was arrested after urinating in front of children at a beauty spot in Stainforth, just north of Settle, Skipton magistrates were told.

Smith, of Slaidburn Avenue, Burnley, was a passenger in one of two cars that had been involved in a collision on May 26, the court heard.

While two officers were talking to the drivers Smith, who had been slumped on the back seat, got out and, mumbling incoherently, began to urinate against a dry stone wall.

Prosecutor Caroline Midgeley said he was asked to stop by one of the officers but he turned, unzipped his pants, leading a female officer to fear he might try to urinate on her.

One of the officers in attendance, concerned at nearby families enjoying a day out, warned Smith about his conduct. But he was abusive and threatened to ‘nut’ her.

Smith also caused concern when he removed an upper denture plate. He continued to be abusive so was arrested and placed in a police van, where he urinated again.

Lisa Julian, defending, said Smith had not seen any children around but accepts alcohol may have clouded his judgement.

The court heard Smith, who admitted being drunk and disorderly, had served a prison sentence for being drunk on an aircraft. He was fined £100 with £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge for this offence.

In 2009 Smith was sent to jail for ten-and-a-half months after he caused a Thomson flight, bound for the Domincian Republic, to be diverted to Bermuda.

He was abusive and aggressive towards cabin crew, Manchester Crown Court heard, and ripped up two warning letters from the pilot.
