MAJOR works on two of Burnley’s busiest roundabouts is under way to assist the development of what should become one of the borough’s largest employment sites.

Operations have begun to install traffic lights on the Gannow Top and Calvary Way islands, ahead of the opening of the Burnley Bridge Business Park.

And the two roundabouts are being converted into a single ‘wishbone’ structure, also to improve traffic flows, according to county engineers.

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said: “This work is part of the development funding provided by the Burnley Bridge business park and it should improve traffic flows around the roundabout.”

The programme has also involved removing the ability for traffic from Padiham Road or Pendle Way to reach Gannow Lane without going around the new ‘wishbone’ via the Calvary Way - Westway roundabout.

An announcement is also expected soon on when the traffic lights, which are set to be installed on both roundabouts, will be switched on.

The county council had originally submitted a £1.6million bid to the government for supporting from the Department of Transport’s ‘Pinch Point Fund’.

But this unsuccessful so the planning deal cash was identified for some of the works instead.

Further funding from Burnley Bridge developers Eshton is also being spent on improving the junction nine and Network 65 roundabouts and the nearby Rosegrove traffic lights Resurfacing work is also expected on part of the M65, around the eastbound stretch near junction 10, later this month.

The motorway will be closed overnight between 10pm and 5am on three nights between June 19 and 25.
