A CYCLIST is taking on his biggest challenge yet in memory of his nephew who died from meningitis.

Little Clark Pinder was just 12 months old when he contracted the disease and died four weeks later.

His death has inspired his uncle Lee, 42, to try to ride the length of the UK in just three days, covering 320 miles per day.

Lee, a refuse collector from Clitheroe, hopes to raise £2,000 for the Meningitis Trust by completing the Land’s End to John O’Groats route.

The father-of-two plans to start the challenge on Friday, June 21, and said: “I will be relieved when it’s over because it’s such a huge task to be taking on, but it’s for such a good cause.

“Obviously, this is for a charity that is close to me personally and I want to do the best I can for it.

“The training has been intense and next week I will be cycling from Clitheroe to Scarborough to Blackpool and back again to get used to doing a lot of miles in one day.

“I will then get back on the bike and do it all over again the next day.

“I’m hoping that there is no wind over the three days because that would make it a lot more difficult over the 960 mile route.”

Lee has previously cycled from Windsor Castle to Clitheroe Castle and also from Blackpool to York.

His brother, Maurice, a factory worker in Clitheroe, and his friend Richard Atkinson, will be accompanying Lee along the route in a car, providing water and food.

Maurice, 53, said: “I’ll be really proud of him when he crosses the finish line.

“He is doing it for a great cause and it’s amazing what he is going to do.

“It will be a really hard task to complete but I have faith that he will put his all into it and succeed.”
