PICKPOCKETS stole 12 mobile phones from revellers in Burnley, police said.

Customers were targeted in several pubs and clubs in the town centre during one weekend.

An investigation is under way and officers are examining CCTV footage to find out who was responsible for the thefts.

The majority of incidents being investigated are believed to have taken place at five town centre venues, although police would not confirm which ones.

And with the weekend approaching, Burnley town centre PCSO Des Wrest said people should be wary of the threat posed by pickpockets.

He said: “We are asking people to be more aware of their surroundings and to make sure they keep valuables such as their mobile phones, cash and purses or wallets safe and hidden away.

“Make a note of the 15-digit IMEI number which can be found by keying in *#06# into most models of phone. This will help police to trace your phone if it is stolen.

“Other security tips include security marking both the battery and handset with an ultra violet pen and if the phone has a security lock, make sure it is used.

“We are also asking people to let us know if they see anyone acting suspiciously or if they have any information about who is responsible for the recent thefts.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Police said there was no suggestion that organised or out-of-town gangs had swiped the phones but confirmed there had been no reports of pickpocketing since the bank holiday weekend.
