DOZENS of volunteers are helping to create a community orchard.

More than 50 volunteers, and many local groups, turned out to help in the residents’ project taking place at Dyke Nook Gardens, in Whalley Road, Accrington.

The garden is one of the winning entries in the Royal Horticultural Society Green Corner Project, which saw residents awarded £500 to make improvements.

On Sunday, with the prize money, volunteers helped begin the foundations of a community edible garden and orchard.

Another community volunteer event is taking place this weekend to install lots of new features, including raised beds, edible gardens, roses, fruit bushes and trees, and a fernery.

Ward councillor Paul Cox, who entered the gardens in the competition, said: “It was a fabulous day, with lots of people turning out to help.

“Dyke Nook Gardens has all the makings of a wonderful community space for local people, and we want everyone to come along and join in again.

“Everyone will be welcome. You don’t have to be green fingered, just enthusiastic and willing to get stuck in. “ The event, at Dyke Nook Gardens, takes place this Sunday, from 11am to 2pm.
