CHURCH of England worshippers across Lancashire are being urged to mark the beginning of Lent on Wednesday with a day of prayer and fasting.

Blackburn Diocese is encouraging all members to spend part or all of Ash Wednesday in contemplation.

Archdeacon of Blackburn, The Venerable John Hawley, said: “Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and of a renewal process for Christians and is an opportunity to take your spirituality seriously by combining prayer with fasting as a witness to others.

“Many churches will be open across the Diocese to encourage people to set that day aside and to do so in the company of others.”

Blackburn Cathedral will also be open on Ash Wednesday.
