A STACKSTEADS primary school has been told it needs to improve after a recent Ofsted visit.

St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School, in Huttock End Lane, has been rated as “requires improvement” rather than “satisfactory” under the new classifications which were introduced last September.

The report said: “This is a school that requires improvement.

“It is not good because, although the attainment of pupils in English and mathematics by the time they leave in Year 6 is improving and is average overall, it is not good enough given pupils’ capabilities. Teachers do not always plan work which helps pupils, especially those who find learning easy, to achieve their best or give them enough opportunities to extend their problem-solving skills.

“Pupils are not given enough opportunities to practise and extend their writing skills in other subjects, and governors have not fully checked how well the extra pupil premium money is spent.”

Inspectors said the school is welcoming and caring and that children’s behaviour is good.

They also said achievement in the early years foundation stage is good.
