SIGNAL boxes in East Lancashire — which are due to be phased out — could possibly be listed by conservation experts.
Five different locations are set to be axed across the area after a national review by Network Rail, it has been confirmed.
These include Daisy-field in Blackburn, Towneley at Burnley, Brierfield, Huncoat and Horrocksford Junction, near Clitheroe.
Some of these signal boxes are now only used to control nearby level crossings and will be replaced by automated systems.
But English Heritage has been reviewing the merits of making some of the most historic examples listed buildings.
And these include the Daisyfield site, which has outlasted the nearby station by 54 years, and Horrocksford Junction.
The conservation group is also considering listing Ramsbottom signal box, which is now run by East Lancashire Railway.
