Taxi driver cut free after collision in Oswaldtwistle

A TAXI driver had to be cut out of his car after a collision in Oswaldtwistle.

The 20-year-old was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for checks after the accident in Fielding Lane, close to The Plough pub.

Firefighters from Accrington were called to the scene at 12.15am today and had to remove the Max Cabs taxi door to get the man out.

A female passenger appeared ‘shaken’, according to one witness, but suffered no injuries.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said the accident was believed to have been at low speed.

The taxi was hit as it was turning around by a car heading up Fielding Lane towards Broadfield.

Restaurant boss Franco Sanna, who owns Franco’s in Union Road, lives nearby.

He said: “The man was walking when they got him out of the car.

“It sounded like quite a big smash. I heard it through my double glazing.

“The car certainly looked a write-off. It was taken away about an hour later.”

A 20-year old taxi driver? Is that even legal? Surely taxi licenses should only go to drivers with some modicum of experience, which to me would be at least over 21 and preferably over 25 years old

You can't always blame drivers coming down the high street, I was coming over last week, a truck was turning at the mini rounder bout to come down the high st, didn't go round the mini just cut right across, I had to reverse back or he would of hit me, then the skanky fat b-----d gave me loads of abuse, he was in the wrong not me, ask for the taxi driver being 20, isn't that illegal, someone's got there facts wrong once again, LET

Was the taxi backing out into the main road or trying to do a U turn, i too have seen many accy taxi drivers doing some no brainer moves with and without paying customers aboard, we got a taxi from lower darwen back to accrington last week end and the driver who spoke very little bad english didn't even know the way back to accy.

I used Max cabs once. Never again. The car was f*****, and the driver hadn't a clue.

A taxi pulling away without looking seems to be normal in Hyndburn they think they own the roads I have had many a near miss, I often wonder if they have a licence sometimes.

Supposition and assumption are the weapons of an uneducated mind... If you didn't see it with your own eyes then you don't know what happened. And as for the law on taxi licensing, as a 22 year taxi veteran and only 40 years old I can assure you that the law only requires you to have been driving for 12 months... Do the math!

The mr know alls no nowt you don't have to over 20yrs to drive a taxi or privatehire vehicle but you do have to have held a full licence for at least 12 month
