A HIGH school in Burnley, found to be failing last summer, is making good progress, say education watchdogs.
In a surprise move in June the Blessed Trinity RC Collegee was placed in ‘special measures’ by inspection body Ofsted.
Inspectors have said new headteacher Richard Varey is ‘providing a clear focus and vision for the future direction of the school, which is widely shared by staff’.
The ‘good’ rating by the schools inspectorate, for progress since special measures were imposed, and the last inspection, is an improvement on Blessed Trinity’s previous assessment. Issued following a visit in March, staff and governors were then said to be only making ‘satisfactory’ progress.
The latest development is another reason for supporters of the Ormerod Road school to be encouraged, after the last GCSE results were announced. Six per cent more students there gained five or more A* to C grades, year-on-year, bringing Blessed Trinity into line with national standards.
Ofsted inspectors also praised ‘stronger leadership and improvements to teaching’, for leading to the rise in attainment levels.
Students have reported that, as well as feeling safe in school, they are aware the school has high expectations regarding conduct and uniform matters.
Phil Naylor, assistant headteacher, said: “We are pleased by the positive comments of the inspection team.
“Our students, staff and governors continue to work tirelessly to provide our pupils with the very best Catholic education.”
