FORMER Blackburn Rovers footballer Harry McShane, father of actor Ian McShane, has died aged 92.

The outside left came to Blackburn in 1937 after signing for Rovers from Bellshill Athletic, near his home town of Holytown, in North Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Aged just 17 at the time, his career was massively disrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War.

He managed to play just twice for Rovers before signing for Huddersfield in 1946.

He played the majority of his career at Bolton, before playing for Manchester United, and Oldham Athletic.

He also had a stint with non-league side Chorley as a player coach in the mid-1950s.

After retiring, McShane became the announcer at Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium, and was known as ‘the voice of Old Trafford’.

He also worked as a talent scout, where he was credited with spotting England international Wes Brown.

Blackburn Rovers operations director Paul Agnew said: “The club would like to express sorrow at learning of the passing of Harry McShane and extend sympathy to his family and friends at this sad time.”
