A night at the theatre was the theme of the show with the skating stars bringing the West End onto the screen.

This week skill was: “The Jump”. Each celebrity must jump with both blades leaving the ice at the same time and with no assistance from their professional partners.

Quite a difficult element to be performed and all the VT’s, which were played at the beginning, showed them all falling over and having problems landing.

Some interesting costumes were on display when all the couples skated on the ice, one at a time to be introduced to the audience and I am sure “guess the song choice” was played in many watching households across the country.

With a special performance from the cast of “Wicked” to take place later in the show, the first couple took to the ice.

Jeff Brazier and Isabelle

Opening the routine with very smooth three turns with a leg extension it is clear to see that Jeff has made big improvements in his skating.

He managed a three-jump sequence without any problem with Toe Loops and Salchows and this week looked at his most confident.

Skating well with Isabelle, together they managed to perform a ‘drape lift’ on the crescendo of the music with her being held above his head.

A score of 22 was most certainly well deserved and I really enjoyed watching the routine.

I think the slower, strong pace really suited Jeff and showed off what he can really do.

Denise Welch and Matt

Denise had a great week last week as she skated much better than before.

Skating to ‘Roxy’ from ‘Chicago’ she looked great in a black hat, blazer, sparkly leotard and sparkly tights. I have to say there wasn’t much solo skating in this programme and when there was it looked slow, stilted and unsure.

Having said that she surprised me by pulling off her three waltz-jump sequence but it was executed at a slow speed.

When she is holding onto Matt her skating picks up speed and she bends her knees more.

I would love to see her move quicker on her own but at 52 she is allowed to be tentative on the ice.

Only 0.5 below last week's score but I thought she did well although Denise could have possible performed the routine slightly more.

Sam Attwater and Brianne

We all know Sam is the one to beat and he has no problem performing many of the skills that are given to him every week.

He performed his jump – a Toe Loop – Toe Loop combination and not, like the announcer said, a double toe-loop combination (which is something completely different and much more difficult).

He can skate competently on his own without the need to hold onto Brianne.

Performance is always great and he uses his whole body to project a routine.

Now, I do think and I know I’ve said this before, he needs to get off his toes on the back crossovers as it’s looking scratchy and he needs to make sure he crosses his feet fully over on certain moves.

Also, when he lifts Brianne off the floor and spins her around in the air, it should be a lot faster as that will make it look more spectacular.

Things to work on for next week!

Kerry Katona and Daniel

Kerry has no problem in performing her routine but it is her skating that is letting her down every week.

I am sure the voting public love her as she is fun to watch but every week I find myself willing her on to skate a little more on her own and with more strength.

Cheeky little adaptation with the jump – she jumped the waltz jump on her own but Dan caught her on the landing for that extra security.

She does looks smoother than the first week we saw her and her confidence is coming with her solo skating and this can be applauded but she is still reliant on Dan and there is still a journey to go on.

Chloe Madeley and Michael

Chloe is usually confident in what she does but this week doubts seemed to have set in. Skating to ‘On My Own’ from “Les Miserables’ she looked lovely in a blue sparkly dress but for me, I thought her skating lacked the usual sparkle and looked tentative.

There is no doubt that she is one of the better skaters in the competition and solo skating doesn’t pose a problem. I would like to see her work on her leg lines as the feet are sometimes turned in when she extends her leg which can make quite an ugly line but this is just something which needs refining and will come with more practice.

She is strong in her skating but at times I thought her facial expressions looked pained and forced in parts of the routine so her emotion and connection to the music also needs work on.

Johnson Beharry and Jodeyne

I love Johnson, not only for what he has overcome but what he keeps overcoming on the ice!

Natural skater he is not but his determination and spirit have driven him to improve every week.

This week’s song choice of “Always Look On The Bright Side of Life” from “Spamalot” was the perfect song choice and I thought he performed it really well with great facial expressions.

He managed a waltz jump side-by-side with Jodeyne and a couple of lifts, which are looking stronger.

For me it will be nice to see when Johnson lifts Jodeyne and rotates whilst holding her – but I do think this is weeks away as more confidence is needed.

He still needs work and he isn’t the strongest competitor in the programme but he is showing marked improvement every week and you can’t ask for anything more.

Vanilla Ice and Katie

Skating to “Born To Hand Jive” from “Grease” I have to say I was a little bit disappointed with this routine.

I expected it to be more dynamic but it was quite sedate until the end when he did the two-footed jump over Katie.

I think he took the judges' comments to heart last week and reigned in the out of control movements but maybe took it too far.

Having said that, I thought he looked less like a hockey skater tonight, which is great, and he does love performing his routines regardless of the genre and that’s what makes me like watching Rob. I’m hoping to see a little bit of his free spirit back next week.

Comedy Dave and Frankie

Looking very fetching in a hippy inspired costume (no holds barred on the tie dye and fringing) purple velvet pants and a black wig he skated to “The Age of Aquarius”.

I am sure he will get some ribbing off his colleagues tomorrow on the radio!

Dave is always his best when he is performing the routine and has a character to get into.

I just love watching him! He isn’t the best skater (although he is getting better and acting on the judges comments) but seems to love the whole process and that’s why I like him so much!

The two jumps were done and done competently although his style does need improving.

He has got a long way to go with his skating as we know but for entertainment value he is priceless.

Laura Hamilton and Colin

Skating to ‘You can’t Stop the Beat’ from ‘Hairspray’ this was a fun routine to watch although I don’t think it was Laura’s best skate.

Knowing that the assisted backflip was coming I felt like the concentration was solely on that element and the relief and happiness showed up on her face after she completed it.

After that she let herself go more and the routine became more entertaining. She managed the two waltz jumps but the landing on the second one was slightly wobbly.

A score of 25 was deserved as she can skate and the routine was a difficult one but for me, I thought something was missing and I preferred last week.

The Skate-Off

So, Comedy Dave and Kerry Katona were in the skate off.

Not too much of a surprise as the skating quality is lacking in both celebrities.

Kerry was up first and I thought she attacked the routine a little more and was very gracious about being in the bottom two.

I think the audience likes her, as she is so down to earth, which is why she has gotten so far in the competition. Dave skated next and did two great waltz jumps – much better than in the first routine.

I just love his face – it was so deadpan throughout the routine!

And now for a rant! Kerry goes through on performance even though she is unable to skate alone and unable to jump.

Dave admittedly is not the strongest skater – but he is better than Kerry.

Having 2 none skating judges on a skating is just stupidity as in moments like these it is not the skating skills which are being looked at.

What ITV were playing at when they reduced the number of judges to three, with two people who have never stepped onto the ice, I will never know.

But they are making a big mistake and I am sure many people who do skate are shouting the exact same thing at their TV sets every Sunday.

Rant over!

So next week the “ultimate skills test” will combine the elements of the previous weeks challenging the skaters to fit them all into one routine.

I am sure the results will be interesting!
