A DASH of 1940s classics, a sprinkling of boogie-woogie, a spoonful of gypsy jazz and a dollop of bluegrass - Western Valley Hot Club are heading home for a big night out in the Ribble Valley.

Fronted by dazzling violinist Gaynor Sutcliffe, who played a key role in the Swing Commanders’ story for so long before going her own way, the talented Clitheroe trio will be stoking up the temperate gauge when they bring their headline show to the town’s Grand Theatre on Saturday.

“If you’ve seen the Swing Commanders, then you’ll like us because we were all in the Commanders once, so it is the same type of uplifting, danceable sound,” said Gaynor.

“We got the name from Western Swing, a genre of American country music.

“In the 1920s, it attracted huge crowds to dance halls in Texas, Oklahoma and California and we just thought it represented our sound a bit.

“The show’s called the Big Night Out with two sets to get the audience on their feet dancing, and cabaret and theatre seating for those who prefer just to soak it up and enjoy a glass of wine.

“It will be a very mellow evening and if any of the audience want to join in, then they can step on the dance floor and we can teach them a few steps of the Charleston or the Barn Dance.

“They are not hard routines to learn, it is a lot of fun,” added Gaynor.

There’s no shortage of heavyweight musical ability in the Hot Club ranks.

Guitarist Simon Brady was voted British Country Musician of the year in 2010 and Gaynor is a classically trained violinist.

Ray Walmsley on double bass completes the local ensemble, who have forged a mighty reputation for their live performances.

“We’re normally a three piece when we play live, but we’ll have a couple of special guests at the Grand show, Neil Shaw-Hulme, a saxophonist and Tony Dolman on drums, so it is going to be a special evening with four vocalists.”

Gaynor’s mum has run the Sutcliffe Dance School in Clitheroe for many years, and Gaynor added: “As a child I danced a lot, but I rebelled a bit as a teenager and embraced music.

“Music’s my life and when I get up on stage I just come alive.

“We are off on tour to the Czech Republic soon and it is just a great privilege to be able to do that.”
