Smith and Hooper Merlot 2008, £9.29, Morrisons.
Merlot isn’t the most common Aussie red grape, which is a shame since this is a beautifully rich, velvety wine with chocolate and cedar flavours from French oak.
It’s a big one too at 14 per cent alcohol but well worth the price and just reaching its prime.
