ANYONE wandering down Blackburn’s Darwen Street cannot fail to notice the number of takeaways — especially at night when the neon glow is a bit of a giveaway.

Some are good, some not so good. Others are just plain intriguing.

The Cube certainly falls into the latter category.

There often seems to be more activity upstairs rather than down in what is apparently a shisha lounge.

And while something called a Pomegranate Al-Fakher appears interesting enough, to be perfectly honest I wasn’t after a £7.99 shisha pipe to go with my supper.

So instead I perused a fancy fold-out menu that covers paninis, wraps, pizzas, curries but only a disappointing choice of only two kebabs and opted for as steak burger and fries.

It was surprisingly good.

Too often burgers from takeaways can be a grease-loaded taste-free exercise on a bun that appears to be on the pensionable side of fresh.

Happily I can report that this burger didn’t fall into that category.

The burger was tasty and well cooked and the bun soft. Even the salad on the bun tasted pretty good.

The fries were slightly disappointing, standard issue thin efforts served with salt but no vinegar — but for £4 it would be churlish to complain.

And while the Al-Fakher will remain off my radar, if I fancy another burger I may just head back to the Cube.
