PEOPLE who know me and those that don’t but follow these weekly musings will know that I have an admiration for a ‘proper’ butty and a ‘proper’ pie.

That combination is the perfect mix for a midweek dinner - and when you are in Burnley there are plenty of options.

But one shop is a particular standout for me.

Manning’s is well established, not only on Burnley market but in Accrington and throughout the Rossendale Valley too.

You know when you wander through the door you are pretty much guaranteed to walk out with a gourmet delight to savour.

A meat and onion pie, either cold or piping hot, is quite simply mouthwatering but it is the sandwiches that stand out for me.

The other day I opted for a tuna salad completing an East Lancs version of surf and turf. I do try the green stuff but only when the situation demands it but on a ciabatta and it was spectacularly good.

In fact, even I found it a challenge to eat it in one go as it was crammed full of tuna, mayo, onions and other assorted fillings.

So packed is the said sandwich that you can’t really eat it ‘on the go’ and sitting down is advisable.

And wherever you perch you have got a real feast in front of you.
