A youth group organised a special evening meal for those on the margins of society in Blackburn.

The event was held in Blackburn town centre on the final weekend of Ramadan and organised by the community group ‘FACE’.

The team of volunteers took up the challenge of organising the event within five days.

A spokesperson for the group said: “The Islamic faith played a significant role towards the idea of holding this event as the Quran teaches us that feeding the hungry and helping the poor is an integral part of the Muslim belief.

“Muslims emphasise with the poor during this month, therefore this was a chance to show the understanding gained from fasting and act upon it. It was also an opportunity to meet and greet the less fortunate and to learn, reflect and appreciate.”

The event attracted over 100 people, who the team went out and invited personally.

A hot meal was provided along with a variety of snacks, desserts and cold drinks. There was an abundant amount of non-perishable food items and toiletries kindly donated by members of the community which the homeless are in need of.

One man, who recently moved to Blackburn after living in New Jersey, USA, for 23 years expressed his gratitude.

He said: “This is the best thing anyone has ever done for me since I've been in the UK”

A group spokesman said: “This itself is a big achievement we should be proud of.”
