Students from one high school raised more than £1,000 for charity after taking part in two fundraising events in a matter of days.

All of Year 8 at Pleckgate High School took part in the British Heart Foundation Jump Rope skipping event.

This saw 250 students sponsored to skip in the school’s multi-use games area.

One student Fatima Bi, 13, took the fund-raiser very seriously and went round family and friends to personally raise £63.50.

She said: “We took part in the skip-a-thon during our Personal, Social and Health Education lesson and we were supposed to skip for 15 minutes but we enjoyed it so much we skipped for 45 minutes.

“The following day we held a Cancer Research UK Race for Life event when female students and staff ran three times round school – a distance of 5km.

“It is important to support these charities so other people have a chance to live.

“My grandmother Mumtaz Akhtar passed away with cancer about three years ago. As I was running the Race for Life I had her name written on my back.

“Both events were good fun, especially the Race for Life where we all dressed up in pink clothes and we had pink marks and moustaches on our faces.”

Head of Year 8 Nichola Hartley said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed the skip-a-thon and all got involved, including many members of staff.

“Some of the students and staff were fantastic, some were running and skipping and all were very enthusiastic to take part and raise money.”

Pleckgate is known for raising thousands each year for charity and in this academic year so far more than £13,000 has been raised for various good causes.
