I’M not a big fan of awards ceremonies, especially as they tend to reward the already extremely well rewarded.
Undoubtedly, Grand National winner AP McCoy is a reasonably worthy winner in that he has broken almost every bone in his body in his long career. Whether or not this makes him a ‘personality’ I’m not sure and everyone (including him?) seemed to know he was going to win anyway.
It was great to see Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor pick up second place and push the case for darts as a genuine sport, though!.
Like everything else it’s a celebrity job these days, with the likes of James Corden presenting awards. Predictably the Ryder Cup squad took team of the year, and it was no secret when David Beckham picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Beckham stole the show as the crowd applauded for a full five minutes before he even spoke and when he did he was a humble recipient, even, in full seriousness, listing Preston North End as one of the great teams he has had the privilege of playing for.
Some of the audience laughed, but he wasn’t joking. Quite right, too.
