I make no apologies for returning to this programme, but in an age when we celebrate any performance deemed slightly out of the ordinary, let’s recognise the services of Adam Richman to gluttony.

In the past, I’ve seen Richman devour massive burgers, gigantic grills and whopping kebabs, as well as a pizza the size of a man-hole cover.

In the latest episode to be screened, though, he took on a challenge that only eight people had previously completed.

Having scoffed a shovel full of oysters and a fried chicken sandwich covered in sausage gravy in Charleston — yes, this would have to be in America, but don’t don’t worry, there’ll be a British version soon — Adam takes on the spicy tuna sushi challenge.

This involves the consumption of 10 sushi wraps, each one increasing in heat as the competitor progresses. Others who have attempted the challenge have finished feeling distinctly unwell — one said his ears were on fire, while another claimed he felt like he had burned off his stomach lining.

There’s no stopping Richman, though, and the first three barely touch the sides, with the next four also pretty quickly gone. But it’s then that the burn starts, and, after polishing off number eight, the Rich is in trouble. His cheeks are billowing and he’s blowing a lot, but just when it looks as if it’s game over he remembers the inspiring words of a previous competitor: “Don’t think about the food, just eat it as quickly as possible.” Four swallows later and he’s done it, much to the delight of a somewhat overly enthusiastic diner crowd.

Richman is rightly delighted with his performance and should particularly be applauded for his refusal to give in despite the intense pain he was obviously in. You wouldn’t get footballers giving that level of commitment to their cause.
