WHAT more could you ask of a TV show than to see a group of singletons sniffing each other’s shirts and then dating each other in a pitch black room?

Living TV’s Dating In the Dark puts a whole new slant on the term “blind date” with contestants literally trying to meet their soulmate in total darkness.

It’s got to be said, Living TV has come up with some way-out programmes in its time, but in this case it’s totally got it right — it’s hilarious and enthralling.

The idea is that we’re all so shallow that we rule out potential partners because they don’t fit our ideal of how we want them to look. But in each episode six people, who are genuinely looking for love, take up residence in a specially designed house.

They go through various rounds of dating including trying to find a match on the basis of each other’s voices and their smell.

Then they finish with a one-to-one date in the dark.

The best bit, however, is the end where the couple get to see each other — but without seeing their partner’s reaction.

Then in a brutal culmination they decide to date or dump.

And there’s a twist. If you’ve been dumped you might well be able to see your desired-one skipping off into the sunset with one of your rivals out of the window, thanks to the specially-designed house where the competition takes place.

Rejection has never been so harsh. Or so funny.
