Is there no end to the combinations of ex-soap stars and ridiculous reality TV concepts?

It seems not with the launch of Soapstar Superchef. Yep, from the team who brought us Soapstar Superstar, where former soapstars sang for their supper is Soapstar Superchef - where they actually make it.

There I was, channel-hopping when I happened upon someone who looked remarkably like Martin Platt from Coronation Street wrapping pancetta round a chicken breast.

On closer inspection it was Martin Platt! And he seemed to have transformed into Anthony Worrall Thompson.

All of a sudden, up popped Richard Arnold (GMTV's soap guy) and Nicky Chapman (the woman who used to do Pop Idol) in some kind of presenter role.

Then we were shown an old clip of Martin Platt in Corrie acting out a food-based scene.

Back in the studio a contestant on the other team had to break off cooking to answer questions on the aforementioned scene. "What colour were Audrey's earrings, gold or silver?" asked Nicky, earnestly.

What?! Is this the weirdest show on TV?

As if the mix-up of formats wasn't enough the show seemed to be out to educate ton cross contamination. "It's terribly important to wash your hands," said one judge.

You don't say! When the show ended I was as bemused as I was at the start.
