MY hair stood on end at the prospect of watching my favourite childhood story brought to life on the stage.

The Roald Dahl tale of James and the Giant Peach came alive on the stage at the Grand Theatre in Blackpool.

Seven-year-old James Henry trotter lives with his mean Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, who make him do all the chores and never allow him to play with other children.

One day James meets a mystical old man who gives him a bag that contains the strongest magic the world has ever known.

When James accidentally spills the bag near an old peach tree, the most incredible things start to happen – and James embarks on the adventure of a lifetime with his team of larger-than-life insects.

The production, performed by the Birmingham Stage Company, has a faultless cast in this mesmerizing show.

As the stage curtain lifts, the audience are treated to a musical introduction.

The cast are not only fantastic actors, they are great musicians too and play a variety of instruments, as well as singing a number of catchy tunes.

The ensemble of loveable characters really engages with the audience with their take on the popular children’s book.

And the set is stunning! The musical cast are able to sing and play their instruments while crammed inside the giant peach!

A good sprinkling of humour is added by the two supporting cast members, who play the scooter-riding sharks and larger-than-life seagulls.

My four-year-old daughter was dancing in her seat. And I have to admit I couldn’t help but smile throughout the majority of the show.

There is truly nothing I can fault with this family-friendly production. It was everything I would hope to see and more from a stage show of such a magical book. A five star performance!
