Elizabeth Golding and Michael Clucas succeed in their aspiration to study medicine!

Elizabeth Golding aged 18, a former student from St Augustine’s, gained an A in Biology, A in Chemistry and A in Psychology. Achieving these top grades, Elizabeth will be going to study Medicine at Nottingham University.

Alongside her dedication to her studies to achieve these exceptional grades, Elizabeth also committed herself to striving to create opportunities for others. In January, Elizabeth travelled to India on behalf of the Northern Cleft Foundation, a charity providing cleft lip and palate surgery for children and adults in India. A cleft can be completely corrected with a simple surgical procedure that could take as little as 45 minutes. The tragedy is that without corrective surgery, these children are condemned to a lifetime of isolation and suffering. Many are even abandoned or killed at birth.

Elizabeth’s passion for music has been a further platform for her charity endeavour. Elizabeth was able to help organise a concert in aid of Action Duchenne, a charity working towards a cure for Muscular Dystrophy, raising over £200 in the process.

Elizabeth states about achieving her aspiration: “Since being a young child I have always felt the desire to help young people, and I have a firm and simple belief that becoming a doctor would allow me to realise that dream.”

Michael Clucas aged 18, also a former student from St Augustine’s, attained an A* in Biology and A in Chemistry alongside grade A in English Language. Michael will be going to Liverpool University to study Medicine.

Like Elizabeth, Michael has offered his services to help those who are in need. He volunteered to care at the local hospice and community club, sitting and talking with patients in both these settings. Michael also volunteered at Blackburn Hospital gaining invaluable insight into the life of a doctor in how they co-ordinate care, treat patients and work in a wider healthcare team.

Michael states about achieving his aspiration: “The prospect of life-long learning in a career for which I have such an enthusiasm excites me, and I look forward to the challenge.”
