TWO prominent members of Nelson St John Ambulance Association were awarded one of the movement’s top honours in 1965.

Divisional superintendent Joseph Smith and divisional officer Edward Coyne were invested as serving brothers of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. Both had been with the association for many years.

Mr Coyne worked in the toy-making department of Victory V, in Nelson.

A former fireman, he had retired as a sub officer from Nelson Fire Brigade in 1957 and worked in Seattle, at an engineering plant, for some time before returning to East Lancashire.

His colleague was a cloth looker in a local mill.
