THE arrival of the 1960s heralded a battle of the hairstyles.

Top hairdressers in Germany, Austria and France were all vying for haute coiffure supremacy, with brand new fashion styles, which were being copied by stylists throughout East Lancashire.

They all had partings with bouffant crowns with waves and “puff balls” framing the face.

One of the salons to offer round-the-clock elegance was Howsons, which had branches in King Street, Salford and Sudell Cross in Blackburn.

Its advert which appeared in the Telegraph in the first weeks of 1960 showed a “lovely dressing, suitable for day or night”. and styled by our own staff’.

Perms were big news then, more than 50 years ago, and customers could also opt for tinting and hair shaping.
