A MAJOR overhaul has been completed at a Burnley garage by an East Lancashire-based trading group, creating at least 10 jobs.

Spar and Subway are the anchor tenants for the newly-refurbished Kay Group premises in Rossendale Road, which was given planning approval last September.

Land for the development of the Texaco service station was acquired from neighbouring company Veka and did initially include a drive-thru element.

But this part of the scheme was scaled back, though a new pumps layout, helping to ease traffic congestion on the main road, and increased retail space, remained central to the venture.

Speaking at the time, Paul Blackmore, non-executive group chairman, said: “This development and expansion will bring more than 10 new jobs, locally employed, including additional management.”

The group was started by Ken Kay in 1972 at Intack Service Station in Blackburn.

Now based in Grimshaw Park, Blackburn, it has around a dozen locations across East Lancashire and West Yorkshire.

Last summer the company made its first acquisition over the border, acquiring the Hard Ings Road service station in Keighley from the Co-operative Society.

Work has also taken place to widen what’s on offer at another flagship Burnley location, Kitchens in Trafalgar Street, which is now home to Spar, Subway, Greggs and Pizza Hut stores.

The same firm also operates the Eastern Avenue service station in Burnley and other sites in Bacup, Clitheroe and Darwen.
