Former leader of Burnley Council praised

Lancashire Telegraph: Coun Julie Cooper Coun Julie Cooper

THE new leader of Burnley Council has thanked his predecessor for ‘transforming’ the authority.

Coun Mark Townsend recently took over from Coun Julie Cooper after she stepped down to concentrate on campaigning in the 2015 General Election.

The Labour councillor for Brunshaw said: “Firstly, I congratulate my predecessor Coun Cooper who has transformed a council known for talking a lot and delivering little to a council of action. Burnley Bridge, Innovation Drive, the Todmorden Curve, Manchester Road Railway Station and the Weavers’ Triangle have all been taken from the town hall committee rooms to actual bricks, tracks and mortar.

“The partnership established with local business and entrepreneurs has been recognised nationally as best practice.

“Burnley is now a place to invest and do business. I am taking over at a time when government cuts are hitting the council hard.

“Tough choices lie ahead as we reform our services to meet the financial realities of a 19 per cent cut in our government grant.”

Reply to the Leader of Burnley Council Mark Townsend letter 10th 2014
Your quote from you letter, Cllr Cooper who has transformed a council for talking a lot and delivering a little. I think you need to come in to the real world, and stop living on what funding Lib Dems brought to Burnley. Your letter should read I would like to thank our MP Gordon Birtwistle and Councillor Charlie Briggs for the funding brought to Burnley which made these project possible, Burnley Bridge, The Todmorden Curve, Manchester Road railway Station, Weavers Triangle and the New Urgent Care Centre. As for the government cuts have you forgotten who caused these problems, well I will remind you it was your Labour government and don’t forget it was labour who closed our A & E in the first place. As you say in your letter you look forward to building on the achievements of your predecessor. Building on zero does not take a lot of doing does it.

I seem to recall that the Labour Party was in control for a good many years so I presume that Councillor Townsend is referring to them in his "a council known for talking a lot" reference.

"The last Labour leader of Burnley Council was fantastic," said the new Labour leader of Burnley Council.

"All the really good things that are coming to fruition now are all thanks to her. The projects all started just a few months ago. It is amazing that she could deliver them in no time flat whereas the previous Lib Dem Council did nothing but talk about them for years.

"The only real problem I am going to face in the next few years is that the coalition Govt has cut all our funding, meaning that everything that goes wrong during my time as leader will be their fault."

I think you'll find Cllrs Townsend and Cooper, that the praise for the curve should be given to Conservative Cllr, David Heginbotham. He was the one who started it all.

I hope that our residents take the time to look what has been brought to fruition in this town courtesy of our current MP, Gordon Birtwistle and NOT to fall for the empty promises of Julie Cooper.

It's not about what happens in London, it's about what is created in Burnley that matters. Ok, he might not have achieved everything he promised but I firmly believe that he has far exceeded in other areas.
