Burnley man remains in custody after armed siege
9:00am Thursday 26th December 2013 in News
A THIRTY-six-year-old man was still in custody after his arrest following an armed police siege.
Police were called to reports of a domestic incident in Lowerhouse Lane, Burnley, just before 4pm on Monday.
But a man inside the house had barricaded himself inside an upstairs bedroom, throwing objects on to the stairs making it impossible for anyone to reach him.
Police, including dog handlers and armed police officers, cordoned off the area, surrounded the house and specially-trained negotiators attempted to encourage him to surrender.
But after five hours, officers armed with tasers climbed a ladder to the street-facing first-floor bedroom and smashed the window.
During the siege, residents were urged to stay in their homes, but a small crowd gathered at the police cordon to watch the drama unfold.
A fire crew was also on standby to assist police colleagues, but they were ultimately not needed.
Police confirmed at the time of going to press the man was in custody and was yet to be charged with any offence.
