THREE Burnley schoolchildren have been chosen to create a series of road safety films by the BBC.

Io Limmer, Lewis Hindle and McCauley Wrighton were chosen by Lancashire County Council (LCC) and Calico Creative to make a number of animated clips at with Newsround producer Chris Bailey-Foxx.

Burnley currently has the highest rate of road safety-related accidents among young people in East Lancashire, outside of Blackburn with Darwen.

The borough also has the highest number of primary school-aged pedestrian casualties in the whole county.

This summer, the Lancashire Telegraph launched its ‘20 is Plenty’ campaign, which called for the completion of 20mph zones earmarked for residential areas in East Lancashire.

Io, from Worsthorne Primary School and Lewis and McCauley, from Hameldon Community College, carried out research to discover people’s views about road safety.

Lewis Hindle, who made a trip to the BBC in Salford to work on the project, said: “The thing I enjoyed most was creating the story boards for the animation.

“After today I am going to make sure there are no cars coming before I cross the road and I won’t take chances”.

County Councillor John Fillis, LCC cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Working with Calico Creative is a fantastic opportunity for young people to engage in road safety messages in a very innovative way.

“Not only will they learn potentially life-saving lessons from the experience, but the films they produce will help to spread vital road safety messages to the rest of the community.”

The children were involved in a number of aspects of the films’ prod- uction, including script-writing, animation, music and graphic design.

Six BBC production staff members are also working with the young people on the project, including a music director, graphic designers and radio and film producers.

The films will be premiered in January 2014.
