STAR Colne batsman Matt Wilson is facing up to the prospect of his season being over after he suffered an horrific broken finger during Saturday’s loss at Burnley.

Ther 31-year-old former skipper left the field as put down a difficult chance off Chris Burton while fielding at short extra cover in the match at Turf Moor.

He immediately left the field and was taken to hospital – and underwent an operation on Sunday morning.

Specialists have told Wilson that his season is over but he insists he will battle on to try and return and lift the Horsfielders off the foot of the Lancashire League table.

“The consultant told me that my season is over,” said Wilson. “But we will see about that though.

“My finger is very badly broken and my knuckle smashed to pieces.

“I had an operation on Sunday morning and they tried fixing it all together and put a metal rod in. That gets taken out in three weeks then I have to go through a period of intense hand physio after that and we will see where we go from there.”

Wilson missed games earlier this season thanks to a break of another finger and has struggled through the campaign as the Horsfielders have suffered a torrid time.

They are bottom of the table, although they were briefly up to 13th on Sunday after they beat Haslingden in a high scoring game only to drop back down when Rishton picked up bonus points from their defeat to Accrington.

Key all-rounder Jeff Ellis is also out through injury - but there are still positives coming out of Colne and Cricket manager Gary Hunt says Sunday’s win will lift everyone’s spirits.

“It was an excellent performance against a very good team,” said Hunt. “And to win as we did 24 hours after losing at Burnley was particularly good.

“Cricket like all sports is a confidence game and we have been low on that. We lost Jeff to injury and now Maz (Wilson) is out for the majorty of the season with a bad break.

“So Sunday was a great result for us and hopefully we can kick on now and get one or two more good results.”

Colne are going through a rebuilding process with younger players getting their chance alongside the elder statesmen and in wicket-keeper Sam Tilltoson they have a real shining star.

Tillotson picked up five more victims over the course of the weekend to move to 21 victims for the season including brilliant stumpings of Michael Brown and Graham Knowles.

“He did well and it a good keeper who works hard,” added Hunt.
