LANCASHIRE County Cricket Club have appointed Blackburn teacher and broadcaster Dave Edmundson as the new Old Trafford secretary.

The Queen Elizabeth Grammar School physical education master beat off over 100 applications to land the prestigous post.

Dave is already well known in Lancashire for his cricket and football commentaries on both the local and national TV and radio network.

He takes up the Old Trafford post on April 1. Mr Edmundson will work alongside the current secretary, Rose Fitzgibbon, until she retires next July after 40 years service to the county.

"I'm proud, thrilled and overwhelmed that the Lancashire committee have invested their confidence in me," he said.

"This is a vibrant time for Lancashire County Cricket Club. I think this county is on the threshold of something quite special. "I'm very passionate about the game and cricket is very much part of my life. I love the game and its traditions.

"I'm very proud to have got the job. It is a tremendous challenge."

Edmundson's post at Old Trafford will be a two-pronged appointment.

He is also named as secretary for the proposed Lancashire Cricket Board which, in time, could oversee the whole of grass roots cricket in Lancashire.

"Cricket is now in the big league of television money. That increases the possibility that more money will percolate down to the grass roots of the game," he added.

"That is the fervent hope of many people in Lancashire. The game is changing and I believe there is a tremendous future at Old Trafford."
