HABERGHAM High School's physical education department has five full time and five other staff who teach a wide range of aspects on the practical side of the subject.

And we are very proud of our achievements both on the sports field and in the class room.

For while we teach the subject at GCSE level as an option we also run it at A level standard and this year had a pass rate of 96 per cent.

We pride ourselves on the facilities we offer our pupils and have two gymnasiums, six netball and tennis courts, two small grass hockey pitches, four full size football pitches, one Cricket pitch and two hard court areas used for football.

On the football pitch our year seven team are the most successful having lost just twice all season and winning a total of 12 out of their 15 games including In the senior school the firsts, seconds and third teams have all had good seasons.

Basketball is a sport that is attracting a lot of attention at the school and we have teams in years nine, 10 and 11. The year 10 team have improved greatly as the year has gone on, having lost to St Theodore's. And the year nine team have also enjoyed success, coming second in an eight team East Lancashire tournament in Preston. Cricket is another sport we have enjoyed some success in and have five teams from the sixth form down to under 12s. The under 12s and under 14s enter the Lancashire cups and have had quite a bit of success in the last year. The under 12s reached the semi final, before losing to the eventual winners, and the under 14s reached the quarter finals.

The under 13s and under 15s play in the local schools league and have been successful in the past. We also play against other schools throughout Lancashire.

In the school teams have done exceedingly well at the district inter schools sports championship, with the boys winning five out of a possible eight trophies and finishing runners-up in the other three.

Individually Colin Bailey was selected by Lancashire to compete in the high jump in the intermediate boys at the National Championships where he did very well to finish second.

He finished the season with a record breaking jump of 1.85 metres which beat the existing Burnley school's record by some margin.

The girls have also enjoyed their fare share of success in a wide range of sports. The most outstanding achievements in sport include Claire Stacey and Rachel Ball who both represented the Lancashire trampolining squad and Rachel also had trials for the county netball team and represented the Burnley Town team on the Athletics track - where she lined up alongside fellow pupils Lisa Ashworth and Jennifer Hodgson in the 100 metres relay team.

She showed her all-round ability be competing in the long jump in the Lancashire Schools finals while Lisa came second in the 200 metres final at the same event.

Like the boys, the girls have enjoyed a lot of success in athletics and Laura Griffiths and Lindsey Clark ran for the town team in the 800 metres relay team. Lyndsey also won the Lancashire Schools' 300 metres title and went on to compete in the English Schools Athletics tournament and Laura ran in the 800 metres at the Lancashire Schools' event.

Other girls to compete in the county finals were Claire Stacey, Gemma Goodwin and Laura Gilroy who all took part in the javelin event.
