CRAIG DUXBURY'S feat in taking 9 for 62 in the recent match against Glossop set Prestwich Cricket Club's statistician Bob Hinchcliffe poring through the record books.

And while Duxbury's exploits with bat - he hit 150 not out against Sale Moor - and ball did set records for the club in the Lancashire County League, he is still not top man when it comes to the club's all-time records.

In the bowling stakes he trails behind the legendary Stan Thompson, who took 9 for 22, again against Glossop back in 1964 when the club played in the Lancashire and Cheshire League.

Seam bowler Stan, now 64, took 152 wickets for Prestwich that season, 127 in the league and 25 in the cup.

His 8 for 7 against Norden takes third place in the all-time best bowling performances and another supreme effort that yieded 8 for 21 against Denton etched his name for a third time in the top five.

All those performances came in that memorable 1964 season and Norden were certainly sick of the sight of him by the end of it, for he took 8 for 30 in the return league match and 8 for 29 in a cup-tie for a combined total of 24 wickets for just 66 runs.

Stan, who lives in Crumpsall, and also played for Middleton, Cheetham Hill, Radcliffe and Little Lever, now spends his leisure time racing pigeons, so doesn't get to see much cricket these days.

But he is hoping to make a trip down to Heys Road soon to meet up with young Mr Duxbury.

"I'd like to see him in action and if he ever does beat my record, I'll be the first to shake his hand and buy him a pint," said Stan.
