A NEW book tells the story of David Whitehead -- the man who founded modern Rawtenstall.
Helmshore Local History Society, with help from a grant from the National Lottery, has published a 200-page book which will be launches at Haslingden Cricket Club on April 19 from 7.30pm.
It is more than a 150 years since the self-made cotton master David Whitehead set down his eventful life in two large ledgers which are kept in Rawtenstall Library.
Now those words have been reprinted in the book with a lengthy introduction by Professor Stanley Chapman, of Nottingham University.
Historian Chris Aspin said: "David Whitehead did more than any other person to found modern Rawtenstall, and as Prof Chapman points out, he was one of the few self-made industrialist to describe his experiences."
Together with his three brothers, he build Hollymount and they were also influential Methodists who founded Longholme Chapel where David was buried in 1865.
The book will be sold at £15 but copies are available at the launch for £12.
