A FORMER sporting son of St Helens has died at the age of 71.

Gordon Rimmer, originally from Dentons Green and an ex-pupil of the Higher Grade School, played Cricket at the St Helens Cricket Club throughout the 1940s and 1950s and rugby union with Liverpool St Helens and Waterloo. He had a short spell in professional rugby league with Salford before a serious injury curtailed his career.

In 1953 he emigrated to Tasmania when the Tootles textile company, from Parr, re-located there. While living Down Under he was instrumental in the growth of the Tasmanian cricket team and their inclusion in the Australian state championships. He was a state cricket selector for many years.

A highly respected Tasmanian sporting figure, Gordon also figured prominently in the Devonport football team and following his death a stand at their stadium was named after him.

He died suddenly following a fatal heart attack on Sunday, July 8, leaving wife, Jean, three sons, a number of grandchildren and many friends both in Tasmania and St Helens.
