HASLINGDEN Cricket Club have finally landed Andrew McDonald as their professional for this season.

The Victoria all-rounder was originally targeted for the 2003 campaign a year ago but couldn't get a work permit because he hadn't played enough games for his state side in Australia.

However, Haslingden chairman Mark Rothwell is remaining cautious because of the potential doubts over the availability of contracted state players.

Rothwell said: "If we can keep him for a full season and keep him injury-free we will be a force to be reckoned with.

"He has the potential to make a big impact in the Lancashire League and we're absolutely delighted to sign him.

"But I'm not allowing myself to get too excited until I'm picking him up from the airport because I know what can go wrong."

You can't blame the chairman for being wary as both McDonald and fellow Aussie Don Nash were prevented from joining Haslingden this time last year.

And when they finally signed Jerry Cassell it turned into a disaster as he played only three league games and was convicted of drink-driving before flying home injured.

McDonald is a 22-year-old right handed batsman and right arm medium pace bowler who has played for Australia Under 19s in the World Cup.
